Information for patients regarding prescriptions

This leaflet summarises the surgery's arrangements for ordering and issuing prescriptions.

ALL prescriptions must be ordered and collected from the Health Centre, by you or your representative, before any medication is dispensed.

This means that your pharmacist must have your prescription before he/she can provide you with your medicines. Whilst we appreciate that some patients may have had a long standing arrangement with their pharmacist whereby their prescription was ordered and supplied after the medication had been dispensed, this arrangement will no longer be possible.

Your (or your representative) can order a prescription by :

  • Telephoning your request through to the surgery : remember the phones can be very busy on a Monday morning.
  • Sending a stamped addressed envelope with a written request to the surgery.
  • Calling in person at the surgery where your request can be left in the box in the foyer or given to the receptionist at the front desk.

Remember :

  • Please leave enough time for the prescription to be processed and collected
  • Prescriptions will be ready the next working day after 3pm following receipt of your order.

Please :

  • Do not ask your Pharmacist to issued medicines without a prescription.
  • Do not blame the Pharmacist or the GP practice reception staff for this change - this is not their decision.

It is illegal for the Pharmacist to supply your medicines routinely without a valid prescription from your Doctor.

In a genuine emergency where you require a medicine eg if you accidentally run out of your medicines and cannot get a prescription from your Doctor on time, your community pharmacist may be able to help.  For more information about this please speak to your Community Pharmacist or GP.

Thank you for your help and co-operation in this matter.  If you have any problems with this arrangement please let us know.
